In today’s fast-paced world, we often find ourselves glued to our mobile screens. Even when we have mountains of work left, we choose to doom-scroll on YouTube or Instagram Reels, casually wasting time even though we know how precious each second is. Only when a parent comes and takes the phone away do we suddenly remember, “Oh! I had a science project due tomorrow!” We rush to the stationery shop, only to find it closed, and then sit in regret over all the time wasted on our phones. Strangely enough, even though we know this cycle all too well, many of us continue to fall into the same habit. Why is it so hard to balance screen time with study time?
I, too, once found myself trapped in this cycle. It wasn’t until I saw my marks that I was jolted back to reality. My performance had declined severely, giving me the shock of my life. All my assignments were rushed and shabby, and as more deadlines piled up, the stress took over. I had to stay up all night just to complete them. With so much time spent on my phone and trying to catch up, I had little to no time left to actually study. I realized that if I had spent even a fraction of my doom-scrolling time on completing my work and studying, my results would have been so much better.
After this experience, I set some ground rules for myself:
Ever since I started following these steps, I’ve seen a huge change in my life. Not only are all my assignments completed and my exams going well, but I also have enough time to explore and nurture my hobbies. I feel less stressed, more organized, and more confident as I take my responsibilities more seriously. For the first time, I feel like I finally have control over my life—and my phone.
In the end, I’ve learned that making and maintaining a balance between screen time and study time isn’t easy, but it is possible. It’s all about making small changes and sticking with them to see significant results. The sooner we learn to manage our time, the better prepared we’ll be—not just for exams, but for life.
